The Porsche 912 appeared in 1965 as a more "popular" alternative to the 911. With its proven 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine from the 356C and an entry-level price of just 16,250 DM, it continued to offer Porsche driving pleasure to many customers. The perfect weight distribution provided by the lighter engine made the 912 models extremely compliant driving machines. In many tests, it was even considered superior to the early 911 in terms of driving dynamics.
Production of the Porsche 912 ceased in 1969, making it a sought-after collector's item today – especially in this early version with a short wheelbase and original technology.

Porsche 912 Coupe SWB built in 1969
The Porsche 912 is a sports car that Porsche built as an entry-level model from 1965 to 1969.
From April 1965, the Porsche 912 replaced the less powerful 1.6-liter 356. This car had a modified four-cylinder engine from the Porsche 356 SC in the rear, producing 66 kW (90 hp). While the engine's power was somewhat lower in the 912, the flexibility of the engine improved considerably, with maximum torque now available at 3500 rpm.
An additional improvement was the optional five-speed transmission (surcharge of DM 340.00). Large-volume intake silencers reduced engine noise.
The chassis of the 912 differed little from that of the 911. Nevertheless, the handling was more forgiving and the tendency to oversteer was less than in the first 911s because the car with the four-cylinder engine was less rear-heavy.
The 912 was designed, not least, to retain Porsche customers who found the 911 too expensive. The Porsche 912 cost 16,250 DM at launch, making it 5,650 DM cheaper than the 911. Fuel consumption was also considerably lower than the 911, at 10 to 12 liters per 100 kilometers. Porsche offered the 912 for a total of four years.
It was more simply equipped than the 911, but received many minor and major improvements from 1965 to 1969. From the start, for passive safety, it had, like the 911, a steering column bent in two places, a dashboard padded at the top and bottom edges, and a laminated glass windshield.
Until the 1967 model, there were three instruments: a cluster, speedometer, tachometer, and, as optional extras, a clock and outside thermometer – a different instrumentation than the 911 – all in green. With the two instruments available at an additional cost, the dashboards were indistinguishable at first glance.
The 1967 model came standard with five green instruments, with the instrument cluster simply split into a fuel gauge and thermometer, and a clock added – in green. Starting with the 1968 model year, the more modern-looking white instruments were available, adapted from the 911 without the chrome.
Starting with the 1967 model year, the Targa version was available with a folding rear window. For the 1969 model year, the wheelbase was extended by 57 millimeters to 2268 millimeters, the front and rear fenders were extended to the sides, the storage area in the door panels was enlarged, and the controls were relocated. Also new was a smaller steering wheel with a padded horn button.
The Porsche 912 comes standard with steel wheels; light-alloy wheels measuring 5.5 × 14 inches (185 HR 14 tires) or 6 × 15 inches (185/70 CVR 15 tires) were available as an optional extra from 1967.
The 912 was produced in Coupé and Targa body styles until the summer of 1969.
